Golf
The English Golf Union Limited (EGU) has served as the governing body of male amateur golf in England since it was founded in 1924. Based at the National Golf Centre in Woodhall Spa, the EGU is one of the largest sports governing bodies in England looking after the interests of over 1,900 golf clubs and 740,000 club members. It is a non-profit organisation run for the benefit of the game and its players.
In 1995 the EGU acquired Woodhall Spa Golf Club and built the Donald Steel designed Bracken Course and coaching academy to create the National Golf Centre. The National Golf Centre is now the home of English amateur golf and provides a top class coaching environment for the National Squads as well as excellent golfing facilities that are available to all players, whatever their handicap. The National Golf Centre offers discounted rates to all members of the EGU, allowing members to play the 18th best course in the world according to www.top100golfcourses.co.uk The Hotchkin, for only £67.50 (during the summer) and £45.00 (during the winter).
The EGU organises all the major men's English amateur championships including the English Amateur, the English Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (the Brabazon Trophy) and other International matches hosted by England.
The EGU is a member of the England Golf Partnership. The England Golf Partnership is comprised of the English Golf Union (EGU), English Ladies Golf Association (ELGA) and the PGA with the support of the Golf Foundation and Sport England. Its aim, through the implementation of its Whole Sport Plan, is to increase and widen participation levels in golf and achieve a vision of being ‘The Leading Golf Nation in the World by 2020’ from grass roots right through to elite level.
